A ladylike battle

29 Apr 2016

I really, really don’t like to fight. I can’t stand violence.

And no matter where I look, it seems that lately, violence is everywhere… so it’s time to take a stand. Like a lady.

I make this distinction because one of those violent manifestations is directly targeted at women. I don’t know if the apparent uprise in sexual violence is due to the fact that nowadays victims don’t stay quiet (and they shouldn’t!), but suddenly I’m always stumbling upon a story here, an article there… and I feel so powerless. Because no matter what I do, I can’t offer them any comfort. Because there’s always some misogynist ready to victim blame them or argue that “it’s not that big of a deal”. Because I’m a woman and I don’t want to live in a world where women are always potential targets, and even worse, this is considered normal and even expected.

But as I previously stated, I can’t stand violence, and I think it’s never the answer.

I think we should fight more assertively. If we allow ourselves to get carried away by anger, we’ll be fuelling the very problem we want to end. And it won’t be easy, but surely we can show the aggressors that they hold no power over us. That we simply won’t stay shut when we see an injustice.

So, for May’s wallpaper (avaliable for your computer, tablet and phone), I thought it would be nice to have a constant reminder of this battle. As women and as human beings, we are as mindful as to do no harm to any sentient being, but as powerful and determined as to take no shit. From anyone. Not now, not ever.

Remember that every time you leave the house, every time you need to confront an “unwise” person. Remember it’s time to fight. Like a damn lady 😉
